The acidity of a lubricant is an important control parameter. It affects smooth operation of the refrigeration system. Two chemical processes can affect the quality of the oil and also lead to a damaging build up of acid and sludge in the system: The build up of fluoric and chloric acids caused by a change in a chloric refrigerant and, when using POE oils, the build up of fatty acids through hydrolysis. These acids then begin to form metallic salts and oxides (iron or copper) that can block the oil filter or plate moveable metallic parts with copper. These phenomena are harmful to the system as they block oil pumps and can cause significant damage due to a lack of lubricant. New oils (mineral, alkyl benzenes and polyol ester oils) have different degrees of acidity due to the additives used in them (anti-wear, anti-oxidation, anti-corrosion, etc). The additives put in by producers serve to reduce mechanical wear in the compressor and lengthen their service life. TESTOIL is a ready-to-use product for onsite use. The measurement process is simple, quick and effective.
