The EX2 from ALCO CONTROLS is an electronically controlled expansion valve whose power is determined using pulse width modulation. It can be operated by any suitable electronic controller. However, ALCO EC2 controllers are particularly recommended.
The EX2 expansion valve is controlled via pulses with variable pulse widths that allow for very precise temperature regulation. It is suitable for all conventional HFC and CFC refrigerants as well as for subcritical CO2 applications and can be used in conventional refrigeration systems or in systems with several evaporators / compressors. The EX2 is constructed similarly to a solenoid valve, but additionally has a damped valve slide as well as a nozzle for refrigerant expansion. The special design guarantees low noise operation and particularly avoids dreaded liquid hammering. During operation, the valve switches between fully open and fully closed. A valve body can be combined with 6 replaceable nozzle inserts to cover 7 power ranges. The selection table below specifies the capacities for valves opened to 100%; it is recommended that you select a valve for 50-80% of this capacity in order to cover differing operating conditions. The ASC standard solenoid that is used to operate the EX2 is available for many DC and AC voltages. For controlling the EX2 we recommend the compact EC2 controller from EMERSON as this offers cooling point regulation alongside many other features. The controller sends out a 24 V~ pulse every 6 seconds to the EX2.
