Due to the extremely tough conditions to which compressors are subjected in transcritical CO2 applications, it was decided to develop an entirely new compressor platform rather than to simply modify the existing HFC compressors. The design of these compressors has been undertaken using state of the art methods such as finite element methodology. Particular attention was given to the heat exchange phenomenon between the high and low pressures in the compressor, resulting in an innovative design that also optimised the efficiency of the machine. Very high pressures were also achieved in order to satisfy tough system requirements.
